Flying the UN flag?

Many years ago, it was suggested that all the ships in the world, sailing on the seven seas, should fly the UN flag, symbolizing the fact that they tie nations, cultures and peoples together. When the NCL cruise ship SS Norway was commissioned in 1980, the UN flag was hoisted. This was to mark the fact that the ship was like a little United Nations, with people from many different countries working together on board and having their home-away-from-home there. And, most importantly, it was to remind her owners of their responsibility to take care of this international community.

The UN should have a permanent presence on the seven seas:  A UN flag ship sailing from continent to continent all year around, would serve as a catalyst in the pursuit of making it  a better world. With activities and programs onboard and ashore supporting what the UN mission is all about.

Conflict prevention and conflict resolution

In view of the need for a concerted campaign against terrorism and a transformed view of the concept of defense, perhaps the time had come for someone to take a suitable warship and convert it into a peace ship.

Dismount its weapons, paint it blue and white, hoist the UN flag and deploy it on a global mission to help bridge cultural disparities, improve the human condition, defend the environment and stimulate global governance. This ship would have been the forerunner of a new vessel, specially designed to carry out such a global mission. Now it is proposed that such a vessel, GAIASHIP, be built.

In addition to its commercial cruising activities, GAIASHIP will provide an important international meeting place and world forum, bringing together leading figures within industry, science, politics, public service, education and religion.

A ship has natural advantages as a base for sensitive negotiations and similar events: it can go where it is needed and can be isolated from external events and pressures. Assuming it is permitted to fly the UN flag, the ship would also offer a safe and secure platform.

Hopefully, the stimulating environment on board will help motivate these world leaders to think creatively and take positive steps towards the resolution of their differences to the benefit of us all.
