Simple Tips On How To Prevent Pests In The Home

It is important for all of us to be mindful of the saying that goes, “An ounce of prevention is better than a pound of cure” particularly when it concerns home maintenance. We should not always rely on the presence of the pest control companies that can be called for the task of pest extermination on short notice. A better option is to ensure that pests are prevented from making our homes as their indoor shelter.

Pest prevention first before everything else

  • Leftover foods usually become the source of nourishment for pests. All types of food in the home must be kept in covered containers. If there are leftovers from last night’s dinner, make sure they are disposed of responsibly in tightly closed trash bins.
  • Cookies, biscuits or chocolates must be stored in glass containers. It is important to teach children to dispose of crumbs in the proper way so that they do not attract pests.
  • If plumbing pipes are leaking, have them fixed immediately to prevent water from accumulating. Make sure that water does not collect under the flower pots and also under the refrigerator to prevent it from becoming a breeding ground for mosquitoes. There are certain species of mosquitoes that thrive on clean, accumulated water.
  • If the house is cleaned regularly, there is less clutter where pests can hide and make their home. Get rid of old newspapers, magazines and cardboard to prevent rodents.
  • Pests enter the home through holes and cracks. Inspect the home thoroughly for any holes where rodents can enter. Cover the holes with wire mesh and caulk all cracks and crevices.
  • Baits are the first line of defence against rodents but make sure to teach the children not to touch them to prevent accidents.
