The GaiaShip
Foundation sponsored the voyage of a full-sized replica Viking
longship named GAIA to
the 1992 Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro. The ship sailed under the UNICEF
banner as an ambassador from all the world's children and her 'cargo' was
thousands of messages of hope and concern from children along her 15,000-mile
journey from Norway. These messages reminded world leaders of the pledges
made at the UN World Summit for Children in 1990 for a better world for
all children.

2002:
-
Innovative,
environmentally friendly design
-
-
The renowned Danish naval architect
Tage Wandborg has already developed a design for the second vessel. GAIASHIP
will be 236 meters (about 774 feet)
in length, with a displacement of 33,236 metric tons and a gross tonnage
of 58,400 GRT. She will carry 1,400 passengers in very high quality accommodation,
plus 550 officers, staff and crew. The design and construction of
the vessel is wholly environmentally friendly, with gas turbine engines,
solar panels, refuse incineration and recycling.

The
GAIA Globe
-
-
The major feature is a gigantic
globe, 6 decks high and located amidships. Within this globe is a main
deck where each of the world's major religions has its own holy place,
side by side, with an opening onto a walkway round a staircase and an elevator.
The deck below is for the politicians and bureaucrats, with a conference
and meeting suite allocated for the use of the United Nations. The deck
above forms a common religious/political meeting place where everybody
can get together to strengthen what is, despite all our differences, our
natural common fellowship.
