As the name connotes, couplings are devices that couples two drive elements to transfer motion from one element to the other. Shafts are normally the drive elements. The couplings applications can be seen quite a lot in automobiles. Let’s get to know how couplings are such an important mechanical element.

Physics Behind Couplings

A couplingis used to transmit torque between two shafts that is either aligned or slightly misaligned. The shafts are usually connected by couplings; however, there are torque limiting couplings which can slip if some extra torque is applied. With the advent of new materials, there are now flexible couplings for industrial applications.

Types of Couplings

There are various couplings manufactured based on their applications. They generally are divided in below 3 categories:

  • Rigid couplings: Where two shafts are coaxial to each other, rigid couplingsare used. Muff couplings and flanged couplings are two types of rigid couplings. For muff couplings, a passage is made in the core to transmit the torque. In flanged couplings, there would be two flanged end pieces on either side.


  • Flexible couplings: Flexible couplingsare used where the shafts have chances of separating and areas where there is a possibility of occurrence of shocks during the transmission. Bibbly couplings, bellows couplings, tyre couplings, elastomeric couplings are various types of flexible couplings.


  • Clutched couplings: They provide heavy-duty performance for overrunning. To accommodate misalignment Clutch couplings are made up of form-flex disc coupling and an FSO clutch. They are ideal for applications with high speed overrunning and low drive speed.

Why you require a good coupling set-up

A good coupling setup accommodates the misalignment between two adjacent shafts rotated by axis. A good coupling needs to be easy to connect or disconnect. They shouldn’t have any protruding ends to function well. The goal of a coupling is to minimise the misalignment in shafts so that power transmission and machine runtime are maximized.


The primary purpose of couplings is to connect two pieces of rotating parts while absorbing some amount of misalignment. By careful selection and implementations of couplings, there can be reduced downtime and maintenance expenses.
